Pottery Wheel-Throwing Courses for Beginners

A Beginners’ One Day Intensive or an 8-week Beginners Course? Whatever you decide on, our beginner courses carefully take you through the start of your journey in our well-equipped space in a small group, creating an environment that’s quiet and well set-up for learning. We specialise in wheel-throwing so one of the things we have prioritised is a maximum class size of 3 students in order to give each person the level of tutor-help that’s needed in the early stages of learning this amazing process. As such our studio is a great place to really work on your skills and understand its joys and complexities with the level of support you need to do this. 8 Week Wheel-Throwing Course

8 x 2-hour sessions, 3 spaces, East London, adult beginner, £495 per person

Starting 22 May 2024

This is a pure wheel-throwing pottery course that will take you through the important basics of the process. The course has been designed for beginners, giving you the opportunity to deepen your knowledge across 8 weeks. With a maximum group of 3 students supported by one tutor over 16 hours at the potter’s wheel, this course will give you the skills foundation for personal development once the course is completed. There are very few pure wheel-throwing classes of this length in London, most ceramics courses are generalist and give students very limited time on the wheel. During this course you will learn how to wedge clay in order to prepare it for the throwing process, centring clay on the wheel, how to throw a cylinder (think mugs or cups), a bowl, a bottle, a plate and how to trim/turn the items you have made in order to give them a great finish, as well as a glazing session. Please note that you will be taught to do some glazing but as the focus is wheel throwing, our staff will glaze some of your pieces for you if they are left unglazed at the end of the course. No previous experience necessary and complete beginners are welcome. This course is taught by one of Jo Davies’ highly experienced tutors.

Course Fee Includes: all tuition, stoneware clay, firings and we will glaze items for you after the day of the course using our white speckled glaze. However, if you would like a choice of coloured glazes, and to do this side of the process yourself, then you can book onto one of our Glaze Classes via the link in your booking-confirmation emails sent after signing-up for our wheel-throwing courses. During this class we will guide you through applying glaze in order to avoid pitfalls and give your work the finishing touch that you hope for.

All tools and equipment are provided at the studio and there are no further fees to pay during any of our courses.

If you have to miss a session: don’t worry, you can book one of our catch-up sessions on Sunday mornings, 9-12, as part of your course fee. These sessions are untaught but will give you the extra wheel-time needed. Maximum of 2 free catch-up sessions per 8 week course.

Extra practice between each taught session and after the course ends: Book our untaught Freewheel Sessions on Sunday mornings and Thursday afternoons for £47 inclusive of clay and firings.
